Proclamation of the Major Masks 2026
Juan Carlos and Miguel Ángel, new Major Masks of the Miguelturra Carnival
One of the most important events for carnival-goers was the one that took place today, Saturday, February 14, 2026. The streets of Miguelturra resonated with carnival music, to the rhythm of brass bands and shouts of “You don’t know me, do you?” and, in this context, the entire town gathered in the Plaza de España to begin a parade to welcome and celebrate Juan Carlos Pérez Ramírez and Miguel Ángel Ruiz Navas, our beloved Major Masks 2026.
The organization of this event, as usual, was the responsibility of the Peña Los Cansaliebres, who on the twentieth anniversary of their Long live the disaster, continue to participate and organize events like this, of great importance within the Churriego carnival.
PICK-UP AND PARADE
Shortly after 6:30 p.m., the procession set off to the rhythm of the brass bands Alhiguí and El Bufón, making its way along Don José Mora Street and Avenida Primero de Mayo until it reached the area around the home of our new Major Masks: Miguel Ángel and Juan Carlos. After a first toast there, hundreds of people moved to the Peña los Cansaliebres, where they enjoyed refreshments before heading to the Carnival Palace, which was completely packed to receive the new Major Masks for their proclamation. The ceremony began with the renewal of the sashes of the Major Masks from 2008 to 2013.
BAND RENEWAL
The event began with the renewal of the sashes, a process that had been underway until now. This process concluded with Julián Margotón Calderón and María Nieves Patón Díaz (2008), Carmen Fernández Roldán and Miguel Muñoz Beldad (2010), Marcela Naranjo Rivas and Buenaventura Rodríguez Paredes (2011), Elisa Sánchez Peco and the ever-present Santos Fernández Mohíno (2012), and Teresa Nieto Nieto and Ángel Rodado González (2013). These were emotional moments in which all the carnival participants once again demonstrated their unity and close-knit community. Petra Domínguez Corral and Julián Gómez Acosta (2009) were absent, but they too received applause from those present.
With municipal and carnival authorities on stage. On one side: Luis Ramón Mohíno (Mayor of Miguelturra), Carmen María Mohíno (Councilor for Culture and Festivities), Cristina López (National Deputy), Miguel Ángel García Llorente (Councilor for Tourism), and Julián Margotón (Councillor for Family).
The carnival representation was headed by Serafín Delgado (King of the Carnival), Diego Rodríguez (President of the Association of Peñas), Alberto Soria (President of the Los Cansaliebres Peña) and the Major Masks of 2025, Berna Martínez and Esther Martínez.
The most anticipated moment of Saturday had arrived. Juan Carlos Pérez Ramírez and Miguel Ángel Ruiz Navas received their sashes and the certificate recognizing them as the 2026 Major Masks, a title they will hold for the rest of their lives. They also received a commemorative ceramic piece for the 2026 Carnival, a selection of liqueurs, and a surprise from their beloved Peña “La Cabra” (The Goat Peña).
JUAN CARLOS AND MIGUEL ÁNGEL, 53RD COUPLE OF MAJOR MASKS OF THE MIGUELTURRA CARNIVAL
Juan Carlos and Miguel Ángel have added to the illustrious list of Major Masks of the Miguelturra Carnival, also joining the carnival group of the same name, which brings together all these great carnival enthusiasts. After receiving the aprons they will wear on Monday at the Frying Pan Fruit Contest, the ceremony concluded with a photo of civil and carnival authorities showing their support for these 2026 Major Masks.
The Miguelturra Carnival night didn’t end there. The Pentagrama Orchestra at the Carnival Palace and the Yesvi Trio at the Workers’ Center were the two main dance venues, in addition to the many other musical options offered in different parts of the town, with the lively atmosphere of Carnival Street and Doctor Fleming Square being particularly noteworthy.
Miguelturra has once again proven that its carnival is unique. A Festival of National Tourist Interest that welcomed thousands of visitors.
