We already have new Major Masks
Orestes Corral and Mª del Carmen León are now officially the major masks of the Miguelturra Carnival.
From today on, Orestes and Mª del Carmen are also members of the Major Masks Peña, a large family of illustrious carnival-goers.
At 6:30 p.m., the procession began gathering in Spanish Square, to accompany and parade through the town’s streets alongside Orestes and Mª del Carmen. A large group of street masks, members of the town’s peñas (groups), José and Antonia, major masks from 2017 and other years, Serafín Delgado, Carnival King, Raúl Domínguez, President of the Miguelturra Carnival Association, Diego Rodríguez, Councilor for Festivities, Fátima Mondéjar, Councilor for Culture, and the Mayor of Miguelturra, Victoria Sobrino, would join them at the CERE (Center for the Arts) as well as various members of the Municipal Corporation.
The procession marched toward the meeting point for Mª del Carmen and Orestes. The Peña los Cansaliebres organized the event, and the Charanga Katapúm Chinpúm provided the colorful music. Upon arriving at the meeting point, family and friends accompanied Orestes and Mª del Carmen, who were moved by the affection of the participants.
The next stopping point was the headquarters of the Peña los Cansaliebres, who prepared a great aperitif, which served as a snack for a long afternoon-night of emotions.
At around 9:00 p.m., the procession arrived at the CERE and the Carnival Palace stood up to welcome Orestes Corral and Mª del Carmen León, who were proclaimed the Major Masks of the Miguelturra Carnival.
From the stage, Victoria Sobrino wished them luck in their new endeavor and praised the work being done for traditional masks, for our street masks.
It was time for the banding, which was quite difficult, as the wonderful costume designed by Mª del Carmen herself made it a bit difficult. Afterwards, they received their diplomas accrediting them as Senior Masks and the corresponding bouquet of flowers. The 1996 Major Masks, Francisco Molina and Dolores Muñoz, took the stage to present them with a very special gift: the aprons they will wear in the Fruit in a Pan competition. To conclude the ceremony, relatives of Orestes Corral and Mª del Carmen León took the stage and presented them with another gift, closing the event with the traditional photo of those present on stage.
