Once again, Ash Wednesday in Miguelturra brought us together at 5:00 p.m. on the esplanade of Bar El Ganadero to begin the traditional Burial of the Sardine.

Under the usual organization of the The Goat Peña, the funeral procession began to bid farewell to Mrs. Sardine.

Accompanied by carnival authorities, major masks and peñas, she made the customary journey to be cremated as the culmination of this carnival day.

Although the weather tried to challenge the town of Miguelturra once again, the carnival-goers resolutely supported this beloved sardine, whose tears came from the sky, with rain falling repeatedly throughout the procession. But this carnival cannot be stopped, as was evident throughout the two-hour funeral.

This funeral procession, led by the King of Carnival, Serafín Delgado, and Octavio Martín, one of the greatest carnival-goers in our history, was also attended by the carnival authorities: the 2025 Major Masks: Berna and Esther, and the 2024 Major Masks: Rafa and M.ª Luisa; in addition to other major masks from previous years, the president of the Association of Peñas: Raúl Domínguez; and the Councilor for Culture and Festivities: Carmen María Mohíno.

As this unique burial concluded, the lifeless bodies of the unfortunate sardines were buried in the fire. Shortly afterward, grilled sardines and lemonade were enjoyed at the traditional facilities of the Peña La Cabra in Pradillo Square in Clavería.

Our Sardine rests in peace, and the people of Miguelturra are still eager to enjoy this Carnival until next Sunday.
